From Marco Polo and Mark Twain to Jan Morris and Elizabeth Gilbert, some of history’s most influential people have been inspired by and written about their travels. Do you have a great travel story that you hope to sell to a publication or website? Or just want to make your writing even better as you share your adventures through blogging, TripAdvisor, social media and correspondence with family and friends?

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica invites aspiring travel writers to its upcoming Immersion Travel Writing Retreats, taught by top travel writers whose works have appeared in publications and media outlets including the New York Times, National Geographic Traveler and on the Travel Channel. Workshop dates are August 30–September 3 and November 7-10, 2013.

Along with participating in informative writing sessions and classes, attendees will take part in half-day adventures near the hotel, interview key local experts and personalities and enjoy unique culinary “assignments” including the Costa Rican chocolate class and organic garden Chef’s table at Caracol restaurant.

Instructors and Dates

Perry Garfinkel, who will lead the kickoff retreat from August 30-September 3, has been a contributor to the New York Times for more than two decades. He has also written for National Geographic Magazine, Departures and HuffingtonPost. He is the author of several books, including his national bestselling spiritual adventure travel memoir, Buddha or Bust, and Travel Writing for Profit & Pleasure, which Arthur Frommer called the “definitive work in the field.” Perry has taught travel writing for some 30 years at such educational centres as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, California State University’s continuing education system and UC Berkeley’s Bay Area Writing Project. He is based in Berkeley, California.

Annie Fitzsimmons and Becca Hensley will lead the November 7-10 retreat. Annie writes the Urban Insider column for National Geographic Traveler and has been a contributor to Forbes, Travel + Leisure and CNN, and a consultant to luxury brands. She’s also handled communications for the Phoenician Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. She is based in New York City.

Austin-based Becca Hensley has never met a stranger. Award winning, this travel and lifestyle writer, poet and essayist can’t resist the unexplored alley, that glass of Champagne in an unknown bar or taking the train far beyond her planned destination. Her work has appeared in hundreds of magazines and newspapers worldwide, but can be read regularly in National Geographic Traveler, Austin Monthly, Toronto Star, Washington Flyer, Organic Spa, Austin American Statesman, Virtuoso Traveler, Bridal Guide and San Antonio Magazine. An expert on all things luxe, she is best known for her first person stories that plunge readers into the moment.
